Puppy vaccine schedule

Puppies usually start the DHPPL vaccine at around 8 weeks, with a dose every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older, then a booster at about 6 months. Rabies is given from 12 weeks. After that, the vet will plan your dog's yearly boosters. Bring the vaccine card to every visit.

Parvo in dogs

Parvo (canine parvovirus) is a serious, highly contagious virus that hits puppies and unvaccinated dogs hardest. Watch for tiredness, not eating, vomiting and diarrhea that is often bloody and foul smelling. Puppies with parvo can become critical very quickly, so come in straight away.

We can confirm parvo with a kit test (BDT 600) and treat it with IV fluids, anti-vomiting medicine and close care. We are open 10am to 9pm and do not keep pets overnight, so the vet will explain how to care for your dog at home between visits. The virus can survive in the environment for months, so clean with diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 30 parts water, left for 10 minutes) and keep a sick dog away from other dogs. Read more about parvo signs, treatment and prevention on our parvo page.

Tick fever in dogs

Tick fever usually means ehrlichiosis or babesiosis, infections spread by ticks. Signs often start 2 to 4 weeks after a tick bite: fever, low energy, not eating, pale or yellow gums, red or dark urine and nosebleeds. Our vets check a blood count and blood smear to find the cause and start treatment the same day. Very severe anemia can need a blood transfusion, which we do not offer, and if your dog needs one we will tell you honestly and help you find it.

Check your dog for ticks after every walk and ask us about tick control.

Skin problems in dogs

Itching, hair loss, red or scaly skin, scabs, a bad smell or constant licking can come from mites (mange), fungal infection (ringworm), bacteria, fleas, ticks or allergies. Each needs a different treatment, so we check first, often with a skin scraping under the microscope, then plan the treatment. Mange (scabies) and ringworm can spread to people, so wash your hands after touching affected skin and come in early. Long-standing skin problems usually need follow-up visits.

When to bring your dog in right away

  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, especially with blood

  • Not eating for more than a day, or a puppy that is suddenly weak

  • Pale gums, red or dark urine, or a nosebleed

  • Trouble breathing or a swollen belly

  • Hit by a vehicle or badly bitten, even if your dog seems fine

We are open every day until 9pm. Call 01600-011644 on the way so we can get ready.
