Parvo Virus Treatment for Dogs in Dhaka
Canine parvovirus, usually just called parvo, is one of the most serious illnesses we see in puppies in Dhaka. It attacks the gut and causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, and a puppy can become critical within a day or two. At Furmillion Veterinary Clinic, 15/2 Tajmahal Road, Mohammadpur, near Dhanmondi, our vets test for parvo and start treatment the same day.
Open 365 days a year, 10am to 9pm. Call or WhatsApp 01600-011644 to book.
Parvo moves fast. If your puppy is vomiting or has diarrhea, bring it in the same day instead of waiting to see if it gets better.

Signs of parvo in dogs
-
Tiredness and loss of appetite, often the first signs
-
Vomiting, often again and again
-
Diarrhea, often with blood and a strong smell
-
Fever, or a low body temperature as the dog gets weaker
-
Belly pain or a swollen belly
-
Fast dehydration: dry gums, sunken eyes and weakness
Signs usually start 5 to 7 days after a dog picks up the virus, though it can be anywhere from 2 to 14 days. Vomiting and bloody diarrhea often follow within a day or two of the first dullness.
Which dogs are most at risk
-
Puppies between 6 weeks and 6 months old
-
Puppies that have not finished their vaccine course
-
Adult dogs that were never vaccinated
-
Newly adopted, rescued or street puppies
The virus spreads through the stool of infected dogs. It can be carried on shoes, hands, bowls and leashes, and it can survive indoors for at least 2 months and outdoors for many months, so a puppy can catch it without ever meeting a sick dog. A study of sick dogs in Dhaka found parvo mostly in puppies under 6 months and in dogs that had never been vaccinated.
Parvo test and treatment prices
-
Parvo (CPV) kit test: BDT 600
-
CBC: BDT 900
-
Distemper (CDV) kit test: BDT 700
-
Dog consultation: resident vet BDT 800, senior vet BDT 900
-
DHPPL vaccine, which protects against parvo: BDT 1,300, or BDT 1,500 with rabies
The parvo kit test uses a small stool sample, and the result is ready within minutes. A dog vaccinated in the past 10 days can sometimes test falsely positive, so tell the vet about any recent vaccine. Early in the illness the test can also miss the virus, so the vet will look at your dog’s signs as well and may suggest a CBC.
How parvo is treated
No medicine kills the parvo virus itself. Treatment supports the body while the immune system clears the infection: IV fluids to correct dehydration, medicine to stop the vomiting, antibiotics to prevent infection through the damaged gut, and careful feeding as the dog recovers. With good supportive care, most dogs survive parvo. Without treatment, most dogs do not recover, and the first 2 to 3 days are the most dangerous.
We are open 10am to 9pm and do not keep pets overnight, so the vet will explain how daily treatment visits work and how to care for your dog at home between them.
Treatment cost depends on your dog’s weight, how sick it is and how many days of care it needs. The vet will explain the cost before starting.
Caring for a dog with parvo at home
-
Keep your dog away from other dogs during treatment and for about 2 weeks after it recovers, as it can still spread the virus
-
Give medicines exactly as the vet prescribes, and never give human medicines
-
Offer water and food only in the amounts the vet advises
-
Come back right away if the vomiting gets worse, your dog stops drinking, or it becomes very weak or cold
-
Pick up any stool and vomit first, then wipe floors, bowls, crates and leashes with household bleach mixed at about half a cup (120 ml) in 4 liters of water. Leave it wet for 10 minutes, then rinse. Never mix bleach with other cleaners. Most ordinary household cleaners do not kill parvo
How to protect your dog from parvo
-
Start puppy vaccines at about 8 weeks, with a dose every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older
-
Give a booster at about 6 months, then follow the schedule your vet sets
-
Keep puppies off the street and away from unknown dogs until their vaccine course is complete
-
Keep new or rescued dogs separate until a vet has checked them
-
Wash your hands and change your shoes after handling street dogs, before you touch your puppy
