Cat Panleukopenia (FPV) Treatment in Dhaka
Feline panleukopenia is a severe and often fatal viral disease of cats, caused by feline parvovirus (FPV). In Bangladesh, many cat owners know it as “cat flu” (ক্যাট ফ্লু). At Furmillion Veterinary Clinic, 15/2 Tajmahal Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka, our vets test for FPV and start treatment the same day.
Open every day, 10am to 9pm. Call or WhatsApp 01600-011644 to book an FPV check.
Panleukopenia moves fast, especially in kittens. Bring your cat in at the first signs instead of trying home treatment for a few days.
Is panleukopenia the same as cat flu?
Not quite. In veterinary terms, cat flu is an infection of the nose, eyes and throat, caused mainly by feline herpesvirus and calicivirus. It brings sneezing, runny eyes and a blocked nose. Panleukopenia is caused by feline parvovirus and attacks the gut and the white blood cells, which is why it causes vomiting, diarrhea and sudden weakness. Because both are often called cat flu locally, tell the vet exactly which signs you have noticed. The PCH vaccine gives strong protection against panleukopenia and makes cat flu much milder.
Signs of panleukopenia in cats
-
Vomiting, often again and again
-
Diarrhea, sometimes with blood
-
Not eating, or sitting by the water bowl without drinking
-
Fever at first, then a low body temperature as the cat gets weaker
-
Extreme tiredness and dehydration
-
A hunched posture or pain when the belly is touched
-
Very young kittens can become critical very quickly, with few warning signs
Which cats are most at risk
-
Kittens, especially before their vaccine course is complete
-
Adult cats that have never been vaccinated
-
Newly adopted, rescued or street cats
-
Pregnant cats, as the virus can harm the unborn kittens
The virus spreads through the stool, vomit and saliva of sick cats and can survive in a home for up to a year. It also travels on shoes, clothes and hands, so indoor cats are at risk too.
FPV test and treatment prices
-
FPV kit test for panleukopenia: BDT 600
-
FCV kit test (for cat flu): BDT 700
-
CBC: BDT 900
-
Resident vet consultation for cats: BDT 600
-
Combined cat vaccine (PCH + rabies): BDT 1,500
The FPV kit test uses a small stool sample, and the result is ready within minutes. A cat vaccinated in the past two weeks can sometimes test falsely positive, so tell the vet about any recent vaccine. A negative result does not always rule panleukopenia out, so the vet will also look at your cat’s signs and may suggest a CBC.
How panleukopenia is treated
No medicine kills the virus itself, so treatment supports the body while the immune system fights the infection. This means fluids to correct dehydration, medicine to control vomiting, antibiotics to prevent other infections and careful feeding during recovery. Cats that get through the first few days of treatment have a much better chance. Keep a sick cat away from other cats until the vet says it is safe. We are open 10am to 9pm and do not keep pets overnight, so the vet will explain how daily treatment visits work and how to care for your cat at home between them.
Treatment cost depends on your cat’s weight, how sick it is and how many days of care it needs. The vet will explain the cost before starting.
How to protect your cat
-
Vaccinate kittens from about 8 weeks old, repeating every 3 to 4 weeks until at least 16 weeks old, then a booster at about 6 months
-
Give adult cats with no vaccine history two doses, 3 to 4 weeks apart
-
Keep new or rescued cats separate until a vet has checked them
-
After a sick cat, wash off any dirt first, then wipe floors, bowls and litter trays with household bleach mixed at about half a cup (120 ml) in 4 liters of water. Leave it wet for 10 minutes, then rinse. Never mix bleach with other cleaners. Most ordinary cleaners do not kill this virus
